Cloning: Water
A pictorial

I tried clonin in water once... ...

Like dirt, clonin in water is one of the oldest techniques known to man...it don't git much simpler. So this wuz never meant to be a tutorial, that's simple enough. Instead, I wanted to take a look at the development of the roots as the cutting goes thru the process of creating them...so this is just a pictorial. Other than removing some extraneous comments, I have left these posts just as they first appeared back on OverGrow...

5/23/04 - Well, I took two clones for our water cloning experiment tonight. One is off the Durban, the other is off an Afghani #1 from Sensi Seed Bank. I thought it might be interesting to compare an Indica vs a Sativa in the rooting process. I have no idea if there are any differences between the two, so I guess we'll find out.

The first pic is the cut tip of the Afghani (ya I know, the flash screwed it up).

The second pic is the Durban (much better pic).

For glasses I used standard bar glasses, you can stea... er ... accidentilly walk off with these from your local pub. Regular tap water was used (thankfully mine is usable), no rooting powder or gel on the clone, and no cloning additive in the water. I wanted to make this as simple as possible.

The Afghani is on the left, Durban on the right.

To block the light from the rooting node I just put the glasses in beer titties (friends will occasionally leave these attached to their empties when they have a few beers atcha house).

Then I just set them on a window sill that doesn't get direct sunlight. We'll see how they do.

Total cost for this process - $ 0.00 -

5/25/04 - I changed the water for the water clones today as it was day 3 for them. They're looking good. The first pic is the indica tip and the second is the sativa. Ya, they're a little fuzzy, I know.

Indica:

Sativa:

5/28/04 - Well it's day 6 for the water clones, still looking good. It's been three days since the water's been changed so it was time to change it again. Looks like the Indica has a root tip forming (the little white spot), but nothing on the Sativa yet. First pic is the Indica, second is the Sativa.

Indica:

Sativa:

I'm guessing this method's going to take a while.

6/1/04 - Well it's day 9 for the water clones so they got their water changed again today. The white spot that was on the Indica is less prominate now. I wonder if I'm doing something wrong, I hope not. Pic 1 is the Indica, Pic 2 is the Sativa.

Indica:

Sativa:

6/4/04 - It's day 12 for the water clones, so new water again. They look good, no wilting at all. They still look as fresh as just cut. On the rooting end however, not much happening. You know the drill, pic 1 is the indica, pic 2 the sativa.

Indica:

Sativa:

6/7/04 - New water for the water clones as it's day 15.

And guess what?

I think we're starting to see some root developement.

On the Indica (pic 1), you can see little white bumps forming on the cut surface of the stem.

On the Sativa (pic 2) however, the little white nubs are forming on the side of the stem.

Hmmm, interesting...

Does anyone know if this means anything?

Well ... we'll keep watching.

6/10/04 - Day 18 and time to change the water again.

Looks like the rooting tips are becoming more developed.

Still curious as to why the indica is rooting from the cut surface and the sativa is rooting from the side of the stem. Anyone know?

Same drill, different day. Indica first, sativa second.

Indica:

Sativa:

6/12/04 - Water change again day 21.

Looks like the indica is trying to root on the side now too. Pic 1 is the indica, pic 2 the sativa.

Indica:

Sativa:

6/16/04 - WOW! What a difference three days makes. It's day 24, water change day, and the Indica has busted out. It has actual roots out the side of the stem. Didn't see that one coming. The Sativa looks as if it is about to take off also.

Same drill, indica first, sativa second.

Indica:

Sativa:

Well, back in the water. We'll look again in three days.

6/19/04 - Time for another water change, it's day 27.

The indica is getting more roots, looking very good.

The sativa is still coming around, just slower. It had it's lowest fan leaf yellow and drop off, but other than that she looks OK.

Same drill, indica top, sativa bottom.

Indica:

Sativa:

And back in the window they go, see ya in three more days.

6/22/04 - Day 30 and time for new water.

Pic 1 is the indica.

Getting more roots.

Pic 2 is the indica again without the magnification. I know it's blurry, I shoulda used a tripod.

Pic 3 is the sativa. Coming along kinda slow.

6/26/04 - Well it's day 34 for the water clones and I forgot to change the water yesterday. Guess it was that Idiots Anonymous meeting that distracted me. I'll try to remember to change it in two days to get back on track.

Pic 1 - More rooting on the indica.

Pic 2 - Even some lateral root developement on some of the longer ones.

Pic 3 - But the sativa is still taking her sweet time.

6/28/04 - Day 36 for the water clones.

Pic 1 - Here's the indica. Thought I could get away with using the micro feature on my camera, but I see it's a bit fuzzy. I'll have to plant this one soon.

Pic 2 - The sativa's evidently in no big hurry.

7/1/04 - Crap! It's been fours days again.

Day 40 for the water clones - new water.

Another lower leave has died on the indica, but the roots are looking very good.

The sativa however...

7/5/04 - Day 43 for the water clones. It's been three days, so I'm changing the water again.

Pic 1 - The indica is starting to amass quite the root system. I think I will probably pot her this week sometime.

Pic 2 - But not the sativa ... nooo ... just like a lady, she is taking her sweet ole time.

Well...

maybe there is another problem...

Pic 3 - The little girl is trying to flower. Perhaps this window doesn't get quite enough light for her. No matter, we'll wait and see.
