Frosty, have you tried adding OxyPlus to your nutrient tank? I have some and since I've been having root rot issues, do you recommend adding this during the last 2 weeks of flowering/ripening?

Thx,

Shady

You can add it whenever you want, it's considered added oxygen to your water. Just don't use it with organics, it will kill the good things.

Cool

Is it correct to assume that GH Flora, Micro, and Bloom are not organics for hydroponics? Also, would you use OxiClean to disinfect the reservoir over bleach? Their instructions for soaking are
For Soaking Applications

  1. Mix 2 to 4 oz per gallon of water.
  2. Add item.
  3. Allow item to soak for 1 to 6 hours.
  4. Remove item and rinse or wash thoroughly.

Yes correct, GH are chem. nutes. I would not use bleach...as for cleaning I would use strictly a dish detergent, oxyclean may work, but I prefer detergent. And as for heavy cleaning use OxyPlus. I would mainly use the OxyPlus on things like airstones and such, because if you used detergent on that, be prepared to rinse forever.
I'm sure dish detergent will clean your reservoir just fine, even with your root rot and pythium problem. The added H2O2 in your res./nute solution is to help rid of the pythum and prevent such things.

Thanks for the response Deek. I think I'll run the MegaGarden and pump with a diluted solution of OxiClean and then rinse with tap water. I should also invest in an airstone for the reservoirs. Could you recommend any for a 6 gal res or are they all pretty much the same?

Thx,

Shady

Whoa wait you haven't been using airstones!? If not maybe that's why you got that root rot problem. You need more dissolved oxygen in your res. The OxyPlus and airstone will help rid of your root prob.

Deek,

Yeah, I remember my sensei and I at the hydro store, before we started this adventure and we thought "Do we really need airstones?" After that I had read several different websites it was theorized that with an Ebb and Flow setup, that as water drains from the hydroton and pot, it pulls fresh air back into the void spaces providing the necessary oxygen for the roots; apparently this was wrong.

However, I don't think that is the sole reason for the root rot on Grumpy. Here's where I think i went wrong with Grumpy as opposed to Shady and Daffy, which are both very healthy, but a little overfed:

  • I didn't truly understand until now, the difference between overfeeding and overwatering. Specifically, I have never really watered with pure 6.0 tap water until the last two weeks (intermittently by hand between feedings during the day). Prior to that Every feeding (4 times a day for 2 min each) was full strength GH nutes (based exactly on their chart).
  • Grumpy was spread thin and has 18 top colas, whereas Shady and Daffy have only 10 or so. Couple this with the small pot sizes, overfeeding, no airstones, no flushes, and high temps/humidity have all contributed to Grumpy's demise
Thx I'm gonna get an airstone as soon as that unemployment check comes in the mail. Actually, I will probably buy them later this week, but this morning I did add a 3% solution of Hydrogen Peroxide to the reservoirs at a rate of 30mL/gal.

Shady
