Spore Question?

I've heard of people re-hydrating whole mushrooms, collecting spores, doing agar work, isolating the strain and growing it out from there...

However, thats usually left to the pros, and usually only when they get something exceptionally rare...I remember reading about them doing it with really ancient mushrooms once.
