no. it's jsut your technique , my oil first run came out black and i thought i did something wrong and i did , just left it purging in the oven too long , try checking your variables next time , or try to locate where in the procedure it went to that consistency

BHO is a non newtonian fluid, meaning that relatively slight changes in temperature can make it thicker or thinner in consistency. It only seems like glass, but if you were to take a dab extremely slowly, you would find it behaved more like an extremely thick liquid. I find just the heat of my hands holding the oil container is enough to liquify it enough to take a toke without it exploding in my face. BTW we call that glass type consistency "shatter" round these parts.

As for THCA, I think that would depend on how hot your purge is more than anything else, though I'm not positive.

Yeah, thank you mate. So I think if I would heat the "shatter" over 106°C for some time it would liquify permanently. IF a high amount of THCA causes shatter. It had a real nice amber colour by the way.

But when I did another run yesterday it got pretty dark and ended up in something I would call "dark shatter". It wasn't black...if you hold it against the light it looks like dark amber. But what causes this darkness? I purged at about 75°C.

That's about 170F which in some opinions is too hot. Try dropping your temps to aroun 150F and see if that helps. In my experiences, I always got darker less tastey oil with higher purging temps.

THCA does not cause shatter i believe that is strain dependent. THC is THCA which has been decarbed. When you look at a trichome it contains THCA which is not psychoactive when ingested, this is the reason you need to "smoke" weed to make it work rather then just eating it, the heat converts the THCA into THC which is psychoactive to humans. when the errl gets heated to much its converted from THCA to THC before you vape it which can affect the taste and high. Not sure what causes shatter but i would expect THCA could be a culprit, but may have to do with other properties of the errlz as well

lol...I see. How can you be sure, that it's not the THCA then? Cause that's what comes out from my research.

So anyone knows _for sure_ what causes shatter?

I'll take a bit of the shatter now and heat it over 106°C for some time. That's the arround point where THCA converts to THC (at least my research says this). When it stays liquid after this it, I would say that it WAS the THCA.

Btw. anybody knows the book "Cannabis Alchemy"? Very interesting to read imho.

You are backwards, the plant produces THCA and we want to convert it to THC through decarboxylation so that it will be psychoactive.
