Default Need help designing my closet

Hi guys, my first post here!

I'm going to build a cabinet in my room to grow about 2-4 plants. I'm interested in learning to grow but this grow project is only meant to last me 1 harvest because I'll be moving away so I'm trying to keep it cheap with CFLs.

I have a few questions. What size is recommended to grow 2-4 plants? I was thinking 25'' wide, 20'' deep and ( not sure ) 50'' tall. I believe that 25'' wide and 20'' deep should be big enough to accommodate the plants but what about the height? Is 50'' enough? I have heard of FIM and I plan to try it.

Also, I often see people start their grow in party cups and then transplant the plants into bigger pots. I'm wondering why not plant the seeds in the big pots from the start? Wouldn't that save the risk of shocking the plants during transplanting?

Thanks guys.

You are thinkin aboot right. Height of 50" is very doable. Look thru the various Grow Journals, and try to find ones similar to wut you wanna do...this will help a lot by providing information ya might not even think of.

Fergit aboot FIM'ing...bad technique fer beginners. Instead, look into LST (low stress training), or do normal topping.

Screw the party cups, use styro...and don't fergit to cut some drainage holes.

Makes watering easier. Unless ya know wut yer doin, seeding big containers kin be tricky.

Transplanting at the appropriate time does not shock plants. The only time you shock plants at transplant, is by doin it too soon and there is not enough root ball to hold things together without tearin the roots up.

Sorry....

...can't.....

ROFL!
TIMMY!!!

No. Bob is on.

PArty cup;s can work ive done it and will do it again I prefer to use pot's small containers ive gotten from other plants when i get stuff for my outside.
But like bob said make sure you have holes for drainage.

LST is a good method. I have bad results with it because i like to highly stress when i tiedown Fim'ing ehh just kinda happens with you top. im with bob id worrie more about fiming when you get a few grows under the belt and have actualy toped a few.

planting seed in smaller cups is best IMO. Just like putting clones in a proper cup/pot size. I do this because i want nice root balls. I think you build a nice root ball starting in a smaller container and moving it to a bigger one. I notice all my plants after harvest the ones that where properly rooted from cup to bucket. have a better root base in the 5gal bucket i finesh up in. Also those plants have better nug formation and weigh.

Thanks for the comments.

Here's some pictures I think at about 2 weeks. Notice the wrinkly dried edges. How can I fix that? At first I noticed it start when I think I over watered. So I waited for 2 days till the soil was dry before watering again. I'm starting to think maybe it's not the water that's causing it.

Not enough water, leaves wilt...too much water, leaves droop...kin look very similar, but either way it shouldn't burn the tips of yer leaves.

There are basically two possibilities fer leaf burn, food and water. If yer water source is run through a salt based water softener, or if it has a very high mineral content, this could happen...so howz yer water source? If yer plant has gotten too much food, it kin burn from toxicity or a salt imbalance...wut are ya usin fer soil?...and have ya fed it any other food?...if so, wut & how much?

Hey Bob, thanks for replying. Yeah I've done my reading and went through the FAQ several times. I use regular drinking water. It comes in a 5gallon bottle that fits on top of a dispenser. It's sketchy here and I don't have a brand to tell you. It's the best the nursery had and it's rated ph 6-6.5. I haven't fed it anything else.

Check on that water source, some bottled waters have sodium in them, make sure yers does not.

Wutz sketchy?...the water or the soil?
Wutz the soil composition?...are there bark/wood chips in it? There's somethin aboot decayin wood & bark that cannabis don't seem to like.
Is the soil pre-ferted, or non-ferted?...you still got the bag listin the contents? Some "hot" soils kin burn younger plants.

*edit* ...oh, or did ya ever have the light closer, possibly burnin the leaf edges with that?

my soil is sketchy. i can't read the ingredients. the only thing i can figure out is two alphabets , the PH rating.

how can i check for sodium in my water? my soil doesn't have any wood or bark in it. it's just soil mixed with other compost materials. I believe it's pre-fertilized.

and nope, i make sure i never have my light too close.

now my plants getting bigger, i realize the first pair of leaves that sprouted were burnt and now gone so my plant looked healthy for a few days and now the 2nd pair of leaves that sprouted are starting to get it. maybe i could just leave it because this burning of leaves is always a few steps behind my plant growth? lol

If it's bottled, it should have a label (maybe on the top that comes off). That label should indicate if sodium is in the water. Companies don't always follow the rules though, so ya might hafta look their stuff up on the internet to find out.

Could be itsa lil hot fer young plants then.

It would be a good idea to leave them on, yes. Plants have certain processes that make that advantageous. They gotta store over-abundances of food...that goes in older leaves. They also dump toxins...they too git put in older leaves. That is one of the reasons I let leaves stay on until the plant is ready to give 'em up.

thanks for your help dude. i think the problem is the soil. will my plants be able to grow better than they get older?

im about 3 weeks in and my plants are about the same height as the picture i posted but getting bushier. Is this right? I thought it would have gotten a lot taller. how do i know when to transplant into bigger pots? and 42day each for flower and veg right?
