yo Bobeth, just saw you gonna use the liquid indicators for ph. I HIGHLY recommmend doing the tests until you have done three in a row that show same color. when i first started to use them, i wouldnt rinse the little vial and would test ph and go from there. Randomyl i tested twice once and saw completely different colors!! and it still happens to me soemties like first test 5.5 second 6.9 lol!! haha . so yeah, just my two cents. Three tests of same color would be my standard

DWC is the shit!!

Just remember guys: Veg them big before you flower, unless you are growing a stretchy sativa. In that case, flip early to avoid overgrowing room.

DWC can and will product AWESOME results, even if you have never grow before. One key to being able to grow big (besides light available) is going to be keeping your buckets nice and clean. This is keep your roots nice and happy. With all that oxygen and nutes available to the roots sitting in a nice clean jacuzzi, you should be seeing some amazing results.

Anyone interested in this should check out MPB (medical patient buckets) or Current Cultures system: The Undercurrent. Pretty price tag, but produces amazing results (talking 4+ pounds a site (plant) when grown with vertical lighting aka 3-4 sides of light)

Good luck all. Im sure Bob will do an amazing job with this thread. Pay attention, DWC can be very easy and rewarding.

Also check out RDWC (recirculating) systems and play around with controller buckets, even float valves for an RO system.

Hmmm...I do not think I am doin very good.

For starters...WUT THE HELL YA DO ABOOT THE SOUND?!
I can't keep doin laundry to cover it up. I already got the pump hangin by a rubber band, got the buckit set on padding, but still that incessant vibration hum downstairs below it. I can't have that. This lil experiment of mine will hafta end iffin I can't quiet 'er down. Those of you on cement floors are lucky, but wut do ya do iffin yer on a wood floor?

Now the other problem....pH.
When I set the buckit, the test kit showed a tan/yellow, right at the 6.0 mark. After I read Existential's post this mornin, I thought I'd better check it....blue. Blue?!?! WTF? I've added vinegar 4x today, lil bit atta time. Last check wuz that lime green, aboot 6.5...lil more vinegar, should be close to 6.0 agin now.
Is there any reason my pH would shoot up like that?
Could the new airstones be doin it?...the new plastic of the lines or net pot?...it's only bin two & a half days, wut the hell would throw my pH off that quick?

And as an added bonus....the gnats have discovered the buckit. Gonna hafta git them mosquito dunks or gnatrol or somethin.

...no wonder I like dirt.

I've never any luck using vinegar as a buffer, its so unstable. typically the buffer in the nutes are enough, but i do use ro water. theres several brands of ph down and up that are much more stable. As the nutes are used, you may find the ph dropping, i counter act this by mixing my nutes at the upper ph limits, by the time the plant needs more water/food, the ph is usually somewhere around the mid range.

i cant stress enough, you need a ph meter, your strips are ok for a pool, but not your plants, everytime you use a new strip, your gonna get a different reading, your always gonna question it. a meter will give you some peace of mind, your readings are correct.

as far as the gnats go, I have no recomendation, I do make sure the top of the hydroton is completly covered, with a piece of black poly. so far so good.

noise: get a whisper quiet air pump. Mine make virtually no sound when then hoses are hooked up.

PH: don't use vinegar, it'll create acetate lumps in your solution. I recommend a proper chemistry mix with EDTA or DTP to maintain correct ph with no checking.

Fungus gnats: take away the hydrotron.

Is not strips...is lil eye-dropper liquid kit. But I'll git a meter when he gits more of the Hanna Checkers in.

Back to well over 7.0 this mornin agin.

Checked TDS...bouncin around 630.

So insteada addin more vinegar, I added 5ml each of the Grow & Micro. I'll re-check the pH & TDS later agin. If I can't git the pH to stabilize, I'll mix up a new buckit.

...I am feelin very....n00b-ish.

I don't think it's the pump vibration...I think it's the vibration from the bubble action...buckit is vibratin.

I'll be gittin some Down.

If no Hydroton, wut holds the plant?

your pump is overpowered, that pump puts out 38 liters per min. that's enough for 5-6 buckets.
i like these pumps because their adjustable and on full its still quieter then my whisper pump.
